Under the Renters’ Rights Act, tenants now have the right to request permission to keep a pet in their rental property.
If you would like to keep a pet, you must submit a formal request using our online form.
How It Works
- All pet requests must be made in writing
- Each request is considered on a case-by-case basis
- Your landlord cannot apply a blanket “no pets” policy
- A decision will be provided within 28 days
Once submitted, your request will be reviewed and you will be notified of the outcome.
Before You Apply
Please consider the following before submitting your request:
- Whether the property is suitable for the type and size of pet
- Any building or lease restrictions that may apply
- Your ability to properly care for the pet within the property
Providing clear and detailed information will help avoid delays.
Important Information
- You must not bring a pet into the property until written permission has been granted
- Landlords can only refuse a request with a valid reason (e.g. property suitability or legal restrictions)
- No additional fees or deposits can be charged specifically for keeping a pet
- You remain responsible for ensuring the pet does not cause damage or nuisance
What Happens Next
Once you submit your request:
- Your application will be reviewed
- The landlord may request additional information
- A decision will be issued within 28 days
